Ivory was one of those South Dakota rock bands that were local legends in the late 70s/early 80s. Don't remember exactly how many times I saw them in Vermillion, Spearfish, Hot Springs, Pierre, maybe more places. They were always "in the studio" recording an album that never was released as far as I know. They had at least one good original song called "Try Me."
They were also always changing the lineup to fit the popular style of music at the time. This shot is Danny Malloy, who as you can tell by his looks, was brought in to attract the hair metal crowd. He was gone from the band in a year or two.
I don't remember the exact date of this show, but it was about 1984 or '85 in the now-gone Cook Gymnasium on the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. A couple of the band members and I walked over to the campus radio station so they could do an interview as the rest of the band and crew set up the stage. Apparently, the band's sound and lighting equipment was too much for the gym's fusebox to handle. We were in the radio station in the basement of the library building when power went out to most of the campus. We guessed what had happened, so found our way out with flashlights and made it back to the gym about the time they got the power back on.
I remember that the aborted interview didn't draw any more people to the show and there were only around 20 or 25 people there. Too bad, too, because they put on a great stage show with huge disco ball, smoke and flashpots.
