To balance out the last post on Motley Crue, here are Christian metalheads Stryper. This is the "In God We Trust" tour on October 5, 1988 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, SD.
If you like 80s hair metal, but have always dismissed Stryper as a gimick or too soft because their biggest hits were ballads, give them another shot. These guys play that style of music about as well as anyone out there, and they are still doing it in 2008.
Here's lead singer/guitarist Michael Sweet.
And lead guitarist Oz Fox.
This concert was not without controversy. White Lion was scheduled to open the show, but a local religious radio station took it upon themselves to protest the show because White Lion was not a "Christian" band. Never mind that their current hit song at the time was about the evils of child abuse and that as many people had bought tickets to see them as they had Stryper.
The station made enough noise that promoters brought in an unkown band to open instead. Concert goers found out that White Lion would not be playing from signs on the doors of the arena as they arrived. Many were upset. I'm not sure if refunds were given or not. I'm also not sure if that opening band was "Christian" or not...
